Do Learning Games Actually Work? What 34 Studies Say

"It's just a game" is a reasonable worry to have about screen time that claims to teach. For chemistry, it happens to be a tested question, with a larger evidence base than almost any other subject gets.

Short answer: Yes, with conditions. A 2022 meta-analysis of 34 chemistry studies found students who learned through games outperforming peers on both immediate and delayed tests. The conditions matter: the game must make the player produce answers from memory, give feedback that gets read, and come back to material on a schedule. Fun alone teaches nothing.

What does the research say about games for chemistry?

The broadest answer comes from Hu, Gallagher, Wouters, van der Schaaf, and Kester (2022), who pooled 34 experimental studies of game-based chemistry learning in the Journal of Research in Science Teaching. Students who learned through games did better than comparison groups on tests taken right after learning, and the advantage held on delayed tests given days or weeks later, which is the result that matters for a cumulative course. The authors are careful about publication bias inflating the size of the effect, so the defensible claim is directional. It's also specific to the territory: the most-studied topics in that pool were element names, symbols, and the periodic table, the exact facts a first-year student has to make automatic.

Do games beat just watching a good video?

In the closest head-to-head, yes. A 2024 study across six Nigerian secondary schools (Idika & Oluwaseyi) taught periodicity three ways: a hands-on puzzle-game format, a video-led format with some interactive elements, and conventional teaching. On the test after the unit, the puzzle group led, the video group came second, and conventional teaching trailed; two weeks later, on a retention test, the gaps had widened in the same order. The students who manipulated the material held it better than the students who mostly watched richer material. That ordering matches what memory researchers keep finding: producing an answer builds more than recognizing one.

Kids, for what it's worth, call it the same way. When researchers in Tanzania asked 180 primary students what helps them master multiplication tables, games and songs came first at 48%, ahead of every option their adults organize (Ndalu & Juma, 2024). A perception survey proves nothing about effectiveness. It says plenty about which practice a kid will actually come back to on a Tuesday.

The rows come straight out of the research. A nine-course university field experiment (Bego et al., 2024) found its clearest quizzing benefits in the courses using produce-the-answer questions with feedback students actually saw, including both of its chemistry courses; multiple-choice formats with unread feedback showed the weakest results. And the Hu meta-analysis carries a caution worth repeating to any parent evaluating an app: students in some studies enjoyed a game more while learning no more from it. Enjoyment is the delivery mechanism. The retrieval is the medicine. Flashcards are retrieval practice, and they work when someone actually keeps doing them; games make the repetitions something a student returns to voluntarily. Research shows self-managed flashcard practice tends to stop too early on hard items.

How much screen time on a learning game is worth it? Short and regular beats long and rare. The spacing research favors brief retrieval sessions spread across days, which fits a ten-minute daily game far better than a Sunday marathon.

Do learning games work for struggling students? The evidence leans encouraging: in the chemistry meta-analysis, most studies that examined prior knowledge found larger gains for students who started lower, and a Swedish trial of timed fact practice found its strongest effects among the lowest-achieving profiles.

What should I look for in a chemistry learning game? Four things: the game makes the player produce answers rather than recognize them, feedback appears immediately, old material keeps coming back on a schedule, and difficulty adjusts to what the player actually misses.
