  • Multiple stable (Fe²⁺ vs. Fe³⁺, Cu⁺ vs. Cu²⁺).
  • Their compounds are often colored because d-orbital electrons absorb visible light.
  • Frequently catalytic: Fe in the Haber process, Pt in catalytic converters.
